HAETAE MARTIAL ARTS

Haetae Martial Arts (해태 무예) teaches the Korean martial arts of Taekwondo and Hapkido.

The focus is on self-defence and traditional martial arts, not sports.

Haetae (also known as Haechi) is a mythical creature who was described as a guardian, a righteous beast who would protect the innocent. It was also said to bring happiness and good fortune.

At Haetae Martial Arts we concentrate on training for self-defence, self-improvement and good health in a relaxed friendly atmosphere. These goals aim to bring the aspects of the historical myth in to the modern day.

TAEKWONDO

Taekwondo (태권도) is the most popular and widely known of Korean martial arts, and is even an Olympic sport. However, at Haetae martial arts our focus is on the martial art rather than the sport. As a martial art it is dynamic and has powerful kicking and striking techniques.

It would be a mistake to think that Taekwondo, which many people loosely translate as being the way of the fist and foot, as only being restricted to kicking and punching. It is a comprehensive self-defence system that also incorporates grappling and joint-locking. It is still used in the Korean army for training of their troops today.

Taekwondo is a great way to get fit and improve your confidence and flexibility while also learning practical and direct self-defence techniques. We offer traditional Taekwondo programs to adults and juniors.

Haetae Martial Arts is associated with the Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Headquarters), and the Korea Tae Kwon Do Moo Duk Kwan.

HAPKIDO

Hapkido (합기도) is a Korean martial art which means the way of coordinated power. What this means is that the techniques used in Hapkido are done in a way to blend with the power and energy of the attacker to defend yourself rather than to meet the power of the attacker head on. It is a means of using the energy of the attacker against themselves. To do this it employs a large range of joint-locking, grappling and throwing techniques in combination with hand strikes and kicks to subdue an attacker. It is possible to also restrain an opponent through locks and pain compliance without inflicting permanent damage.

Hapkido is a comprehensive martial arts system that involves the use of both close and long range fighting techniques. Hapkido, unlike Taekwondo, also uses various weapons such as the short stick, walking cane, rope/belt, and staff.

Hapkido, just like Taekwondo has hand strikes, kicks, blocks, joint locks and throws, however, Hapkido focuses a greater percentage of its time to the techniques termed hosinsul. Hapkido’s approach to hosinsul is typically dissimilar to Taekwondo in that it follows the three principles listed above while Taekwondo can typically but not exclusively, be more linear and direct in its approach. While hosinsul translates as self-defence, typically in Korean martial arts this term refers to the use of various techniques to escape from grabs and holds, as well as methods to deal with and defend against strikes and kicks. Students are also taught to fall safely so that they do not injure themselves when their partner performs a joint lock, take-down or throw on them.

Hapkido is a martial art that will improve your fitness, flexibility, confidence and help you learn to defend yourself. It is taught to law enforcement groups, military personnel and security personnel the world over. We offer Hapkido programs for adults.

Haetae Martial Arts is associated with the Korea Hapkido Total Federation.
